Achraf Hakimi wins 2024 Lion d’Or, honored as Africa’s finest

Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan international and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) standout, has been awarded the 2024 Lion d’Or, a prestigious accolade organized by Moroccan sports journal Al Mountakhab. This marks the second time a Moroccan player has claimed the title, following goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s win in the 15th edition of the award.

The Lion d’Or winner was determined through a vote involving 41 media outlets, with Hakimi earning a dominant 162 points. He was chosen over Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman, who plays for Atalanta (96 points), and fellow Moroccan Soufiane Rahimi, a key player for UAE’s Al Ain club (90 points).

Here is the final ranking for the top contenders:

  1. Achraf Hakimi – 162 points
  2. Ademola Lookman – 96 points
  3. Soufiane Rahimi – 90 points
  4. Brahim Diaz – 73 points
  5. Mohamed Salah – 61 points

This honor caps off an extraordinary year for Hakimi, who has solidified his reputation as one of the best right-backs in world football. His performances for PSG and the Moroccan national team have earned him widespread acclaim, with his contributions extending beyond his defensive duties to include crucial goals and assists.

The Lion d’Or adds another jewel to Hakimi’s crown, reflecting his growing influence in both African and global football.

Hakimi’s win came against a competitive field of exceptional players, including Ademola Lookman, who has been a revelation in Serie A with Atalanta, and Soufiane Rahimi, whose consistency for Al Ain has made him a key figure in UAE football. Notably, Egyptian superstar Mohamed Salah, who has been a perennial favorite in African awards, placed fifth this year.

Hakimi’s triumph reinforces the rising prominence of Moroccan football on the global stage. From the historic World Cup run in 2022 to individual accolades like the Lion d’Or, Moroccan players are consistently making their mark.

As the second Moroccan to win this award, Hakimi continues a legacy of excellence, following in the footsteps of Yassine Bounou, whose heroics have also brought pride to the nation.

With this win, Achraf Hakimi cements his place as a beacon of African talent, inspiring the next generation of players across the continent.
