Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) has been recognised for helping businesses invest in energy-saving measures and renewable energy, as companies face growing pressure to reduce energy use and manage resources more efficiently. The banking group received an award from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) at the GEFF Awards. Loukkos Farm, a client of Banque Populaire de Tanger-Tétouan, also won the award for Best Integrated Project.
BCP was recognised for using three financing programmes to help businesses fund green investments: the Morocco Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (MorSEFF), the second Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF II) and the Green Value Chains (GVC) programme.
The schemes give companies access to financing for projects such as energy-efficient equipment, renewable energy systems, water-saving measures and more efficient production methods.
MorSEFF, developed with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Germany’s development bank KfW, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and France’s development agency AFD, focuses on industrial energy savings and small-scale renewable energy projects.
GEFF II extends support to businesses investing in renewable energy and the more efficient use of water and other resources. The GVC programme helps small and medium-sized businesses improve production standards, use resources more efficiently and meet environmental requirements across their supply chains.
Loukkos Farm was recognised for incorporating energy efficiency and sustainable resource management into its agricultural operations. The company operates in the Loukkos river basin region in northern Morocco and is supported by Banque Populaire de Tanger-Tétouan.
The awards recognise both BCP’s role in directing green financing towards businesses and a specific agricultural project backed by its regional banking network.
BCP is one of the country’s leading financial groups. It operates through a central bank and a network of regional cooperative banks, with a major role in financing small and medium-sized businesses, supporting trade and promoting regional economic development in Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa.
The EBRD’s Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) works with local banks to help private businesses pay for projects that reduce environmental damage and improve resource efficiency. Depending on the programme, support can include loans, investment grants and technical assistance.
BCP’s recognition reflects the growing use of local banks to channel international climate finance to businesses, including manufacturers and agricultural companies. The development of its financing programmes, from MorSEFF to GEFF II and GVC, also shows how green lending has expanded beyond basic energy-saving measures to cover water use, production methods and entire supply chains.
For agricultural businesses such as Loukkos Farm, these investments can help reduce energy and resource use in a sector exposed to climate risks and changes in energy prices.
