Bassil Zekri will become AMMC director of markets in October 2026 after 21 years at Morocco’s financial regulator.

After 21 years working in financial regulation, Bassil Zekri has been appointed director of markets at the Moroccan Capital Market Authority (AMMC), taking up the role in October 2026. Zekri has held several senior positions at the regulator, including head of mutual funds and head of market infrastructures. Before joining the AMMC in 2005, he led fixed-income trading activities at Attijariwafa Bank.

He is also a member of the Futures Market Coordination Body, where he has helped prepare Morocco’s futures market for operation and contributed to the wider development of the country’s capital markets.

The appointment comes as Morocco works to modernise its financial sector and expand the investment products available to businesses and investors.

Futures contracts allow buyers and sellers to agree on a price for an asset today, with the transaction taking place at a later date. They can help investors manage the risk of price changes and are among the financial instruments used in more developed markets.

The AMMC oversees Morocco’s non-banking financial markets. Its responsibilities include supervising market operators, the stock exchange, central securities depositories and collective investment schemes, including mutual funds.

The regulator also aims to improve market liquidity, protect investors and support the development of financial products such as derivatives, exchange-traded funds and real estate investment funds, known as OPCIs in French.
