Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) retained sixth place in Africa’s banking ranking for 2026, while Bank of Africa climbed two places to ninth, according to African Business. The ranking, based on Tier 1 capital, placed Crédit Immobilier et Hôtelier (CIH) 31st and Crédit Agricole du Maroc (CAM) 33rd among African banks.

BCP had $5.874bn in Tier 1 capital, total assets of $62.78bn and net profit of $618m. Bank of Africa recorded $3.837bn in Tier 1 capital, $48.1bn in total assets and $868m in net profit.

CIH reported $1.06bn in Tier 1 capital, $17.99bn in total assets and $134m in net profit. Crédit Agricole du Maroc had $1.014bn in Tier 1 capital, $15.66bn in total assets and $24m in net profit.

Tier 1 capital measures a bank’s core financial strength and its ability to absorb losses. The figures provide an indication of the four banks’ capital bases, alongside their total assets and profits.

BCP and Bank of Africa have expanded across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in West Africa. Banque Centrale Populaire also operates in Central Africa. Their networks support retail banking, business financing and cross-border trade.

CIH and Crédit Agricole du Maroc have smaller capital bases in the ranking. Crédit Agricole du Maroc serves Morocco’s agricultural sector as part of its core business.

The four banks are among nine Moroccan institutions listed in the African top 100. Their combined Tier 1 capital reached $23.3bn, up 14.8% from $20.3bn in the previous edition.
