Cars industry: Morocco’s success puts pressure on Spain’s automotive sector

As Morocco’s automotive industry continues its rapid ascent, Spanish automakers are increasingly worried about Morocco’s competitive edge. Despite their own efforts to reduce costs and enhance quality, Spanish manufacturers find Morocco’s progress difficult to ignore. Industry reports from Spain indicate growing concern among automotive leaders over the intense competition posed by Morocco and North Africa more broadly.

The Spanish edition of HuffPost attributes Morocco’s success not only to its strong production capabilities but also to its commitment to clean energy. Significant Chinese investments have flowed into the sector, with companies like GOTION High-Tech and CNGR Advanced Material establishing factories in Morocco that produce essential components for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. These collaborations highlight Morocco’s appeal as a hub for green automotive production and align with its broader sustainability goals.

Strategic advantages such as proximity to Europe and fast production turnaround times are also bolstering Morocco’s position, making it a formidable competitor. Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, recently underscored this competitive challenge in remarks to OKDiario, signaling the level of attention Moroccan industry developments are garnering among European automotive leaders.

Morocco’s rise is underpinned by a comprehensive strategy that includes a skilled yet affordable workforce, tax incentives, and partnerships with major players like Renault and Stellantis. According to Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Riad Mazour, the automotive sector is projected to generate over €85 billion annually within the next four years, a remarkable target that would represent a six-fold increase from current levels.

In 2023, Morocco’s automotive exports hit €14.25 billion, marking double-digit growth compared to previous years. With an annual output of 700,000 vehicles, Morocco has now established itself as Africa’s largest car producer and the EU’s primary supplier in the sector. This trajectory not only reinforces Morocco’s position in the global automotive industry but also underscores its ambition to lead in both production volume and sustainable innovation.
