A Chinese tyre maker is set to invest nearly $300m in Morocco to build a new factory in Tangier. Guizhou Tire has completed the approvals needed to move ahead with the project at Mohammed VI Tanger Tech City.

The company plans to invest $298.7m in a smart factory that will make 6 million semi-steel radial tyres each year.

The next steps include securing the site and setting up a Moroccan subsidiary. Construction will then begin.

“The project represents the second production base outside China, following the facility in Vietnam,” Guizhou Tire said.

The company approved the investment in January and completed the required overseas investment procedures in August.

The new factory adds to a growing number of Chinese projects linked to the automotive industry in Morocco.

More Chinese tyre projects

Other Chinese tyre makers are also investing in the country.

Shandong Yongsheng Rubber is developing a tyre factory in Driouch province. The project is worth about 6.7bn dirhams ($670m).

Qingdao Sentury Tire is also planning a $500m factory in Tanger Tech. The plant will make high-performance radial tyres for European markets.

Chinese companies are also putting money into electric vehicle batteries and battery materials.

Gotion High-Tech is developing a battery factory in Kenitra. The first phase is expected to cost $1.3bn and have a production capacity of 20 GWh. The company plans to increase capacity to 100 GWh later.

BTR New Material Group is investing $300m in a synthetic graphite plant in Tanger Tech.

CNGR Advanced Material and Al Mada are working on a battery materials project in Jorf Lasfar. Guangdong Hailiang is also developing a plant in Tanger Tech to make copper foil for lithium batteries.

Why Tangier?

Tanger Tech has become an important base for Chinese companies.

The industrial zone attracted 12.22bn dirhams in new investment across 11 projects in 2025. These projects are expected to create 3,882 jobs.

Location is a major reason for the interest.

Morocco is about 14km from Spain at the Strait of Gibraltar. Tanger Med also gives companies access to major shipping routes.

Free-trade agreements with the European Union and the United States make the country useful for companies that want to export from North Africa.

The growing car industry is another attraction.

Renault and Stellantis already produce cars in Morocco, giving the country annual production capacity of more than 700,000 vehicles. The government wants to increase that figure to 1 million.

Chinese investment is now spreading beyond car assembly into tyres, batteries and other parts.

Karim Zidane, minister delegate in charge of investment, said Chinese foreign direct investment reached nearly 2bn dirhams in 2025.

“China is among the top foreign investors in Morocco. Chinese foreign direct investment flows reached nearly 2 billion dirhams in 2025,” he said.

He also said 381 projects had been approved under the Investment Charter, with a total value of nearly 580bn dirhams. Those projects are expected to create more than 245,000 jobs.
