Controversial AFCON final: CAF to deliver its verdict Thursday

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to announce its verdict on Thursday regarding the formal complaint lodged by Morocco’s Royal Football Federation following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. The match, which saw Morocco face off against Senegal, ended amid heightened tension and was marred by a series of off-field controversies.

In response to Morocco’s claims, CAF summoned the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) to appear before its Disciplinary Board on Tuesday. The Senegalese delegation was led by the federation’s Secretary General, joined by legal counsel Seydou Diagne. National team coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, along with players Ismaïla Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye, were also called to testify as part of the proceedings.

According to CAF’s regulations, the allegations brought against the Senegalese side could result in disciplinary actions. One of the incidents under review includes the temporary exit of Senegalese players during the match. However, early indications suggest that the likelihood of Morocco being awarded the win by default remains slim.

With the hearing concluded, the case is now in deliberation. A final ruling is expected within 48 hours and will be officially delivered by the Chair of the Disciplinary Committee on Thursday, January 29.
