Shellfish harvesting and sales have been indefinitely halted in several key areas near Dakhla after marine toxins were detected at concerning levels. The decision, announced by the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries, comes in response to alarming findings from recent water quality tests that revealed dangerous concentrations of marine biotoxins.

The National Institute for Fisheries Research conducted the sampling and confirmed that toxin levels had exceeded the legally permitted limits. The affected shellfish include clams from the northern Boutalha 1 zone, mussels from Tiniguir 2, and oysters from three zones: Boutalha north 2, Duna Blanca, and Tiniguir 1.

Given the potential health risks, officials are urging the public to avoid shellfish that hasn’t passed through official distribution channels. Consumers are strongly advised to purchase only packaged seafood with clear labeling from authorized vendors. Authorities warn that buying loose shellfish—particularly from informal sellers or outside regulated markets—poses serious health risks due to the lack of proper sanitary oversight.

This suspension will remain in place until further notice, pending additional testing and improvements in water quality.
