Morocco has started building a new logistics hub near Fès as the government looks to improve the movement of goods, lower business costs and attract more investment to the region. Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh officially launched construction on Wednesday in Moulay Yacoub. The project is backed by nearly 275 million dirhams in public funding.

The project is being developed by the Moroccan Agency for Logistics Development and the Fès-Meknès Regional Council as part of Morocco’s national plan to improve its logistics network.

Construction will take about 18 months. The first serviced plots are expected to be ready in 2027.

The first phase covers 32 hectares of a planned 100 hectare site. It will include warehouses, cold storage facilities and transport services. The site is located near Fès with easy access to major roads, making it well placed to serve eastern Morocco.

The government says the hub will help businesses move goods more efficiently, reduce transport costs and improve access to markets in Morocco and abroad. It is also expected to support transport, storage and distribution companies while attracting new investment.

Mr Kayouh said the project follows King Mohammed VI’s vision for balanced regional development and a stronger economy.

“This infrastructure goes beyond being a simple facility. It is a strategic lever to support the region’s economic momentum,” he said.

The logistics hub will bring transport and storage activities together in one place. Officials say this will reduce empty truck journeys, ease traffic in cities, improve delivery times and make supply chains more reliable.

Mr Kayouh said manufacturers, farmers, retailers and distributors will also benefit from ready-to-use logistics land, helping them manage stock more efficiently and grow their businesses.

The project is expected to create direct and indirect jobs in logistics, transport, maintenance and related services. It could also help more workers join the formal economy and improve working conditions.

Officials also say the hub will help cut carbon emissions by making freight transport more efficient.

Ghassane El Machrafi, Director General of AMDL, called the launch of the first phase “an important step in strengthening Morocco’s national logistics infrastructure.”

He said the project includes a 100-hectare land reserve, allowing future expansion as demand grows.

AMDL plans to begin offering plots to investors in early 2027. Around 400,000 square metres of serviced land will be available for transport, storage and related businesses.

The site’s location is one of its biggest advantages. It is close to the motorway and the city of Fès and is well connected to major economic centres such as Casablanca and the future Nador West Med port.

Mr El Machrafi said logistics projects worth more than 50 million dirhams, as well as eligible small and medium-sized businesses, can receive grants covering between 10% and 20% of their investment under Morocco’s Investment Charter.

Abdelouahed El Ansari said the logistics hub is part of the King’s vision to support regional development across Morocco.

“The platform will play a central role in opening Fès-Meknès to its national and international environment,” he said.

The Fès project is part of a wider national programme. With this development, AMDL now has more than 500 hectares of logistics zones under development, ahead of its target for 2028.

Mr Kayouh also said the ministry is building a road transport centre in El Hajeb. The site will provide parking, maintenance and other services for truck drivers while improving working conditions and road safety.

Together, the two projects are expected to strengthen transport and logistics in the Fès-Meknès region and make it more attractive for investment.
