Officials in Fez have launched a tender for studies on a planned rapid bus line to help tackle rising traffic and transport problems in the city.

The project is being led by Société Fès Région Aménagements. The studies will look at ground conditions and technical details needed to design the route and its infrastructure.

This phase is expected to take five months.

The planned line, called BHNS Line 1, will stretch about 25km from Ain Nokbi to Fez-Saïss Airport. It will run through major roads and serve key areas including Fez Shore and the city’s sports complex.

The project is part of a wider transport plan approved in 2025, which set out five dedicated public transport lines to be built by 2040. Officials say this first line has been given priority because of growing congestion and poor links, especially in outer areas.

Earlier studies found problems such as overcrowded buses, limited connections between routes and heavy traffic in the city centre.

The plan also ties into a wider effort to improve transport. In June, authorities announced a new public company, Fès Mobilité SA, to manage future projects.

The company will be led mainly by the city council, with support from regional partners.

Officials say the aim is to meet the needs of a fast-growing population, currently about 1.25 million and expected to reach nearly 1.37 million by 2030.
