French senators applaud Morocco’s Southern development: Insights from Dakhla

A delegation of French senators visiting Morocco has expressed admiration for the rapid development in the country’s southern provinces, particularly the city of Dakhla. They highlighted the scale of ongoing projects and their strategic significance for the region’s future.

“We are impressed by both the scale of the projects we observed and those presented to us in Dakhla,” stated Senator Max Brisson (Les Républicains, Pyrénées Atlantiques) during a press briefing in Rabat. The delegation, part of the France-Morocco interparliamentary friendship group, met with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, following their visit to Dakhla.

Brisson emphasized that the development in the southern provinces goes beyond infrastructure, reflecting a broader geostrategic, geopolitical, and geoeconomic vision for the region.

The French delegation, which included Senators Anne-Catherine Loisier (Union centriste, Côte d’Or) and Laure Darcos (Les Indépendants, Essonne), visited Dakhla on Wednesday. During their visit, they met with key regional officials, including the Wali of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, Ali Khalil; Vice President of the Regional Council, Moulay Boutal Lembarki; and the President of the Communal Council of Dakhla, Erragheb Hormatallah.

The senators toured several flagship projects, such as the seawater desalination plant and the construction site of the ambitious Dakhla Atlantic Port, both of which are expected to significantly boost the region’s economic and social landscape.

Describing their discussions with Minister Bourita as “fruitful,” Senator Brisson praised the “fraternal and warm” relationship between France and Morocco. He noted the momentum generated by French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the Kingdom, highlighting the deepening collaboration between the two nations.

The meeting also covered various themes aimed at further enhancing bilateral ties, with Brisson stressing the importance of maintaining and renewing the historic partnership between the two countries.

“We must continue to nurture our relationship and write new chapters envisioned by His Majesty the King and the President of the Republic,” Brisson remarked.

Senator Brisson also announced that Morocco will be the guest of honor at the upcoming Paris Book Fair, underscoring the cultural and diplomatic ties binding the two nations.

The delegation’s visit to Dakhla highlights Morocco’s strategic ambitions for its southern regions, showcasing projects that integrate economic development with geopolitical foresight. As the senators depart, their impressions are set to further bolster the long-standing Franco-Moroccan alliance.
