From heatwaves to stormy skies: what to expect across Morocco This Monday

A wave of intense summer heat is set to take hold across large parts of Morocco this Monday, July 7, with temperatures expected to soar in several regions. The southeast, the eastern Saharan provinces, the Oriental region, the southern slopes of the Rif mountains, and the plains lying to the west of the High Atlas will be particularly affected by the heat.

Meanwhile, residents in the northwest of the Saharan provinces can expect overcast skies with occasional drizzle. Coastal areas along the Mediterranean, the northern plains, the phosphate and Oulmès plateaus, as well as the northwestern edge of the desert, will wake up to patches of mist and fog in the early morning and later in the evening.

As the day progresses, scattered thunderstorms are likely to break out over the High and Middle Atlas mountains and across the southern part of the Oriental region. These storms could bring brief but heavy downpours. Winds will pick up strength in several areas, especially in the south of the Oriental, around the Atlas Mountains, the southeastern regions, and along the southern coastline. In some places, the gusts could stir up dust and sand, creating hazy conditions.

Morning temperatures will remain warm in the southeast and the Moulouya Valley, ranging between 23 and 29°C. In the rest of the country, overnight lows will be slightly cooler, fluctuating between 17 and 23°C. During the day, maximum temperatures will dip slightly in the south but are expected to rise elsewhere, pushing the mercury higher in many parts of the country.

Out at sea, conditions will stay calm in the Mediterranean, with smooth waters and only gentle swells in the Strait of Gibraltar. Further south, however, the ocean will turn a bit rougher, especially beyond the coastal stretch of Mehdia, where waves could grow more noticeable.
