Green Assets Cluster has become the first organisation in Morocco accredited to issue International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC), making it easier for renewable energy producers to certify green electricity without going through foreign organisations.

The launch was announced at the Green Assets Connect event at Casablanca Finance City (CFC). More than 50 representatives from businesses, renewable energy producers, banks, public institutions and international organisations attended the event to discuss the country’s energy transition and green finance.

The accreditation allows Green Assets Cluster to issue certificates under the internationally recognised I-REC standard.

An I-REC certificate proves that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity comes from a renewable source such as solar or wind power. Companies use the certificates to show they are cutting emissions, meeting ESG requirements and working towards net-zero targets. They are also increasingly required by international customers and supply chains.

Until now, renewable energy producers in Morocco had to use foreign organisations to obtain the certificates.

Green Assets Cluster will now register renewable energy plants, check electricity production data against I-REC rules and issue certificates through the international I-REC registry.

The association says the new local service will simplify the certification process and help Moroccan companies compete more easily in international markets.

“By becoming the accredited issuer of the I-REC standard in Morocco, the Green Assets Cluster is providing renewable energy producers and Moroccan industrial companies with a local service that meets the highest international standards,” said Wiam Samir, President of Green Assets Cluster.

“This mandate will facilitate access to globally recognised certification and help strengthen the competitiveness of Moroccan companies committed to the energy transition.”

The accreditation comes as authorities continue working on a national system for renewable electricity certificates of origin. Green Assets Cluster says its role as the local I-REC issuer will increase the visibility and value of renewable electricity produced in the country while providing internationally recognised certification.

“The quality of the Green Assets Cluster ecosystem gives us every confidence in its ability to ensure renewable electricity certification in line with the highest international standards,” said Travis Caddy, Director of Business Development at Evident, part of Xpansiv, which manages the global I-REC system.

“We are delighted to entrust it with managing the I-REC standard in Morocco and to contribute to the development of a transparent, credible and internationally recognised green electricity market.”
