Morocco is doubling down on its ambitions to become a major player in the global green hydrogen market. On Wednesday in Rabat, a high-level steering committee led by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch met to review progress on key initiatives under the national strategy known as the “Morocco Offer.” One of the standout projects discussed was Chbika 1, described as the country’s first concrete step in this strategic transformation.
Karim Zidane, the Deputy Minister for Investment, emphasized that Chbika 1 has now entered a critical new stage. Originally launched in October 2024 during a high-profile ceremony attended by King Mohammed VI and French President Emmanuel Macron, the project will now undergo in-depth technical studies to prepare for its implementation. The committee also approved partnerships with five selected companies, the result of extensive coordination among stakeholders.
Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali noted that six additional green hydrogen projects are currently in the pipeline. These will require substantial investment in infrastructure, including ports, roads, and power grids. According to Benali, the projects are carefully designed to remain cost-competitive while generating significant added value and delivering a tangible impact on regional development.
These initiatives reflect Morocco’s broader goal of becoming a global hub for clean energy, attracting new investment to a fast-growing sector. With a strategic location and strong political will, the country is positioning itself to play a central role in the green energy transition sweeping across international markets.
