Achraf Hakimi will miss the first match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after CAF suspended the Atlas Lions captain following incidents in the AFCON final against Senegal.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender will sit out the game against Gabon on 25 September. Midfielder Ismaël Saibari is also suspended and will miss the opening qualifier.
Both players are expected to return for the next qualifier against Lesotho, which will be played between 27 and 29 September.
CAF punished the pair after a heated incident in stoppage time of the AFCON final, when players tried to take a towel from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Hakimi received a two-match ban, with one match suspended for a year, meaning he will serve a one-match suspension. Saibari was given a three-match ban and fined $100,000.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) was also fined $200,000 over the team’s behaviour during the final, the use of laser pens by fans and disruptions caused by ball boys.
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw was handed a five-match ban and fined $100,000 after telling his players to leave the pitch.
