Moroccan footballer Achraf Hakimi is to stand trial over an allegation of rape linked to an incident in February 2023.

The case concerns events said to have taken place in the French department of Val-de-Marne. The woman, who was 24 at the time, initially went to a police station there and reported a rape but did not file a formal complaint.

Hakimi, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, has denied the allegation. Writing on X, he said: “Today, a rape accusation is enough to justify a trial even though I contest it and all evidence shows it is false.” He added: “I await this trial calmly, which will allow the truth to be revealed publicly.”

His lawyer, Me Fanny Colin, criticised the decision to send the case to trial. She said: “A trial is ordered in the presence of an accusation which relies solely on the word of a woman who obstructed all investigations, refused all medical examinations and DNA tests, refused to provide her phone data, and refused to give the name of a key witness.”

According to a police source, the woman alleged that Hakimi kissed her, carried out unwanted touching and then raped her. Her lawyer, Me Rachel-Flore Pardo, did not immediately comment on the court decision.

Colin also said two psychological assessments of the woman showed “a lack of clarity on the facts she claims to denounce” and claimed that she tried to hide messages suggesting she and a friend discussed plans to “strip” Hakimi. Pardo had previously said there was no evidence of attempted extortion, and warned against what she described as a campaign of pressure or smear tactics.

Hakimi, 27, trained at Real Madrid CF and has also played for Borussia Dortmund and Inter Milan. He is a vice-captain at PSG and a key member of the Morocco national football team, which reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2022, won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, and finished runner-up at the Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

PSG has not yet commented. The news agency Agence France-Presse first reported details of the court decision.
