Moroccan nuclear agency highlights achievements at IAEA Beijing Summit

From July 17th to 19th, the annual meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Collaborating Centres took place in Beijing, with Morocco represented by Saïd Mouline, the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).

The event gathered representatives from Brazil, Hungary, Japan, Jordan, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, Russia, Thailand, and Tajikistan, aiming to strengthen cooperation among Collaborating Centres in the field of nuclear security, according to an IAEA statement.

During the meeting, AMSSNuR showcased its achievements as a Collaborating Centre and outlined future plans to continue enhancing nuclear security. The statement highlighted Mouline’s ongoing role as the president of the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Network (GNSSN), contributing significantly to nuclear security both in Africa and internationally.

Mouline’s participation in the Beijing meeting underscores AMSSNuR’s commitment to close collaboration with the IAEA and its Collaborating Centres to ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful use of ionizing radiation sources.

Since being designated as the first IAEA Collaborating Centre in Africa in June 2021, AMSSNuR has dedicated itself to assisting member states in developing regulatory frameworks for nuclear security, building national and regional capacities with a special focus on Africa, and strengthening regional and international cooperation in the field.

The agency has actively contributed to nuclear security capacity building through various regional and international cooperative activities. Notably, it organized the 3rd International Conference of Regulators on Nuclear Safety in 2019 in Marrakech under the High Patronage of King Mohammed VI, hosted African trainees, facilitated scientific visits and expert missions, and conducted numerous workshops and training courses.

IAEA Collaborating Centres, consisting of institutions, departments, and laboratories from member states, play a crucial role in supporting the IAEA’s programmed activities through the implementation of agreed action plans.
