Date prices in Morocco have gone up a lot in the past few days, worrying many people during Ramadan.

In response, the government has given out special permits to import dates. These permits will stay valid until 13 March. The aim is to bring more dates into the country, increase supply and help bring prices down, while still protecting local farmers from too much foreign competition.

Traders say prices have risen mainly because there are not enough dates on the market compared with the high demand during Ramadan. Dates are widely eaten to break the fast, so demand always jumps during this time. Since December 2025, imports have been controlled under a new licence system.

Under this system, anyone who wants to import or sell dates must give detailed information about the type of dates, where they come from and their expiry date. The government says this helps organise and monitor the market.

At the moment, prices range from 15 to 120 Moroccan dirhams per kilo, depending on quality. The most popular types cost around 45 dirhams per kilo on average.

Officials hope the temporary import permits will ease pressure on the market and make sure there are enough dates for everyone during the holy month.
