Morocco launches major project to boost 16 rural tourist villages

Morocco is embarking on an ambitious plan to elevate 16 rural tourist villages across various regions of the country. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, in collaboration with the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development (SMIT), this initiative comes with a substantial budget of 188 million dirhams (MDH). Spanning the period from 2023 to 2026, the project aims to promote rural tourism, create sustainable employment opportunities, and establish these villages as key drivers of local socio-economic growth.

This transformative program is set to enhance existing infrastructure while introducing new facilities tailored to the unique characteristics of each village. From innovative accommodations to cultural and leisure amenities, the goal is to provide visitors with an immersive experience that celebrates Morocco’s rich heritage—all while preserving local resources and traditions.

Under the careful supervision of SMIT, the initiative will adhere to sustainable tourism principles, striking a balance between economic progress and the conservation of natural and cultural heritage in the selected villages.

To ensure the success and longevity of the program, the Ministry has forged strategic alliances with prominent national and international players, including Club Med, Marriott, Experiencia, and MADAEF. These renowned organizations will bring their expertise in tourism development and infrastructure management, helping to elevate service quality to meet global standards.

The 16 villages selected for development have been grouped into four geographic clusters, reflecting Morocco’s diverse landscapes and cultural richness:

  • Fès-Meknès and Casablanca-Settat:
Villages like Dar El Hamra and Ain Leuh stand out for their deep-rooted cultural heritage and traditional craftsmanship, while Ain Tizgha offers visitors a taste of authentic Moroccan gastronomy.
  • Souss-Massa and Drâa-Tafilalet:
Coastal gems such as Imi Ouaddar and Imessouane attract surf enthusiasts, while the UNESCO-listed Ksar Ait Benhaddou provides a glimpse into Morocco’s storied past.
  • Marrakech-Safi and Béni Mellal-Khénifra:
From the snowy peaks of Oukaimeden to the breathtaking Ouzoud Waterfalls and the scenic charm of Imlil, this region offers a variety of natural and cultural adventures.
  • Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma and Oriental:
Featuring unique attractions such as the legendary musical village of Jajouka and the therapeutic hot springs of Oulmès, these destinations are rich in history and natural beauty.

To put these villages on the map—both nationally and internationally—a targeted marketing campaign will be launched in partnership with key tourism operators. The plan includes developing culinary discovery tours, organizing cultural festivals, and creating dedicated platforms for local handicrafts, all designed to attract diverse audiences in search of authentic and immersive experiences.

This initiative is part of Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its tourism offerings, shifting the focus to rural areas and unlocking their untapped potential. By showcasing local craftsmanship, generating employment opportunities, and improving living conditions for local communities, the project aspires to create a sustainable and thriving rural tourism sector.
