It is a quiet but meaningful shift in Morocco’s media ties with the Francophone world. The country has moved to join the governance structure of TV5MONDE, opening the door to a role in one of the most widely watched French-language broadcasters.
In a letter dated 21 April 2026 to the Swiss government, which currently chairs the group of funding states, Morocco confirmed its interest in becoming part of the decision-making body of the network.
The broadcaster, TV5MONDE, reaches close to 200 countries and territories and is a major platform for French-language television worldwide.
Morocco would become the first African country to join its governance structure if the process is completed.
In the letter, Mohammed Mehdi Bensaid said the move reflects shared values, adding that commitment to the rules is “all the stronger as it comes from a convergence of values and a shared concern for transparency and good governance”.
The next phase involves technical discussions between Morocco and the six current funding governments to work out how the entry would function in practice.
The plan also includes closer cooperation with Morocco’s public broadcaster SNRT, led by Faïçal Laraïchi, including co-productions and content sharing across TV5MONDE’s channels and its streaming platform TV5MONDE+.
