India has agreed to buy 2.5 million tons of fertilizer from Morocco to make sure farmers have enough for the 2025–2026 season.

The country’s Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister, Jagat Prakash Nadda, told parliament that India will get over 8.6 million tons of fertilizers this year through long-term deals. Other agreements include 3.1 million tons from Saudi Arabia and 3.01 million tons from Russia.

“These deals help us avoid relying on just one supplier and make sure farmers have the fertilizers they need,” Nadda said.

Imports of a key fertilizer, DAP, from China fell sharply from 2.2 million tons last year to under 850,000 tons. But authorities say stocks are enough in major farming states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana.

Data shows that urea and DAP supplies currently exceed demand. Urea stocks are 235 million tons, well above the 183 million tons needed, and DAP stocks are 71.9 million tons, above the 51 million tons required.

India has also boosted local production, which rose from 159.5 million tons in 2014–2015 to 211.2 million tons last year. Programs like the Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) and new technologies such as Nano Urea are helping farmers get the fertilizers they need while reducing costs.

Morocco, home to most of the world’s phosphate reserves, is now a key partner. Joint ventures like Indo-Maroc Phosphore SA give India direct access to raw materials, reducing reliance on unpredictable suppliers like China.
