Morocco records higher exports to the EU in May

Trade between Morocco and the European Union continued to grow in May, even as the eurozone’s trade with the rest of the world weakened. New figures from Eurostat show exports from Morocco to the EU reached €2.5 billion in May 2026, up from €2.4 billion in the same month last year.

Imports from EU countries stood at €2.8 billion, keeping the bloc as Morocco’s biggest trading partner.

The figures come as the eurozone posted a €7.8 billion trade deficit in goods in May. A year earlier, it had recorded a €15 billion surplus.

Eurozone exports to countries outside the bloc rose by just 0.1% to €243.6 billion, while imports jumped 10% to €251.4 billion, pushing the trade balance into negative territory.

During the first five months of 2026, the eurozone’s trade surplus dropped sharply to €3.3 billion, down from €78.7 billion during the same period in 2025.

Exports to markets outside the eurozone fell 2.8%, while imports increased 3.4%, according to Eurostat.

Trade within the eurozone remained stronger. Goods traded between member states rose 3.3% between January and May, reaching €1.16 trillion.

Across the wider European Union, imports from the rest of the world climbed 10.8% in May to €227.8 billion.
