Financial Afrik has just released its 2025 list of the most influential banks across Africa, spotlighting the institutions shaping the continent’s financial future. This 122nd edition, which reviews the period from July 15 to September 14, identifies thirty banks that stand out for their regional reach, financial strength, and operational scale.
The ranking is based on a range of key metrics, including total assets, loan volumes, customer deposits, net banking income, market capitalization, and geographic footprint.
Once again, South African banks dominate the top of the list. Standard Bank holds firm at number one, with FirstRand and Absa following close behind. This solidifies Johannesburg’s ongoing leadership in Africa’s banking landscape. Just behind the South African trio, the National Bank of Egypt secures fourth place, making it the highest-ranked institution outside Southern Africa.
Morocco continues to punch above its weight, with three of its major financial institutions landing in the top ten. Attijariwafa Bank ranks fifth, followed by Banque Centrale Populaire in seventh, and Bank of Africa taking ninth. These placements underscore Morocco’s growing influence as a financial powerhouse in North Africa and beyond.
