In 2024, Moroccan customs officials intercepted a total of 167 million dirhams in undeclared currency at border checkpoints, according to the latest activity report from the Customs and Indirect Tax Administration. This figure represents a sharp 59% increase compared to the previous year.

The surge is largely attributed to a significant tightening of border surveillance. Authorities deployed more personnel, improved training programs for customs officers, and bolstered coordination with other security forces. These combined efforts allowed for more accurate profiling of high-risk travelers and strengthened the country’s broader fight against money laundering.

The report also reveals a notable rise in the number of currency declarations filed by travelers. A total of 15,572 declarations were recorded in 2024, up from 12,515 the year before. In terms of value, the declared amounts exceeded 2.5 billion dirhams, indicating a growing awareness among travelers of regulatory requirements and possibly reflecting the deterrent effect of stricter enforcement at entry and exit points.
