Cegelec Maroc is strengthening its footprint in the Gulf region with a major new contract worth two billion dirhams. The company has secured a deal to build three high-voltage electrical substations—two in Saudi Arabia and one in the United Arab Emirates—marking a significant step in its international expansion.

This announcement follows the recent completion of the 400 kV Al Wafrah substation in Kuwait, a landmark project valued at 900 million dirhams. Strategically located and technically complex, the Al Wafrah facility plays a crucial role in the regional power grid, linking the electricity networks of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. The project is part of broader efforts to enhance energy security across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Spanning five hectares, the Al Wafrah substation is equipped with advanced Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) technology. It includes 3.2 kilometers of gas-insulated busbars, ten overhead line bays, and four compensation reactors each rated at 125 MVAR. The facility is designed to handle a power flow of up to 3,500 megawatts, underscoring its importance in regional energy transmission.

The project was commissioned by the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), the intergovernmental body responsible for coordinating power infrastructure across the Gulf. Its successful execution not only showcases Cegelec’s engineering capabilities but also reflects growing international confidence in Morocco’s technical expertise in the energy sector.

Cegelec is leveraging experience gained in Morocco and West Africa—especially through partnerships with the country’s national electricity utility, ONEE—to position itself as a serious contender in high-tech, large-scale projects. The company emphasizes the development of its human capital, boasting the training and upskilling of hundreds of engineers and technicians to meet the rigorous standards of global infrastructure contracts.

With this latest move into Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Cegelec is clearly signaling its long-term ambitions: to become a leading player in the Gulf’s rapidly evolving energy infrastructure landscape.
