Morocco’s Competition Council approves Daimler-Volvo smart truck partnership

In a pivotal move for the commercial vehicle industry, Daimler Truck AG and AB Volvo have received approval from Morocco’s Competition Council to form a groundbreaking joint venture. Led by Chaimae Abbou, vice president of the Council, the decision paves the way for the two global truck giants to develop a cutting-edge software platform designed specifically for heavy-duty vehicles.

This new venture, headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, aims to introduce a new era of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). The platform will allow digital systems to drive vehicle performance improvements while enabling greater flexibility by separating software and hardware development timelines.

Both Daimler and Volvo, leaders in truck, bus, and industrial equipment manufacturing, plan to focus their collaboration on advanced vehicle operating systems and centralized control units. These components will be designed to process vast amounts of data and provide manufacturers with tools to develop tailored digital services.

With this technology, customers will be able to remotely update their trucks’ applications and software features, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing downtime. This represents a significant leap forward in connected mobility and sustainable transportation solutions.

Interestingly, while Daimler and Volvo are working together on this software platform, they’ll remain rivals in the marketplace, each offering its own unique products and services. This cooperative competition reflects the growing trend in the automotive industry: sharing technology to meet new demands for digitalization and eco-friendly solutions, all while preserving brand identities and innovation strategies.

While the Moroccan Competition Council has given its green light, the joint venture’s full launch still hinges on securing regulatory approval in other jurisdictions. Nonetheless, this strategic alliance signals a major shift in how the commercial vehicle sector embraces digital transformation.
