Under the guidance of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem, mental health has been at the forefront of ONDE’s efforts throughout this year. The organization firmly believes that the harmonious development of every child hinges on proper support and a swift response in times of crisis.
Through the National Child Psycho-Trauma Response System (DNPTE) and various innovative initiatives and strategic partnerships, ONDE is dedicated to creating an environment where every child, no matter the challenges they face, receives the help they need to thrive.
Today, as part of World Mental Health Day, ONDE celebrates a year of remarkable achievements. Alongside its partners, the organization looks to the future with determination, committed to building a more peaceful future for every Moroccan child.
A pioneering initiative: The DNPTE
One year ago, ONDE launched the National Child Psycho-Trauma Response System (DNPTE), a groundbreaking program focused on three main pillars:
- Providing urgent psychological trauma care for children affected by human or natural disasters
- Strengthening the capacity of professionals who work with children
- Preventing mental health issues in children
This unique system was designed to offer a fast, structured response to the psychological needs of children in crisis. In its first few weeks, the DNPTE carried out emergency missions in Taliouine, Ouarzazate, and Azilal, in collaboration with the Moroccan National Union of Women (UNFM), supporting more than 125 children and their mothers affected by the Al Haouz earthquake.
Strengthening efforts through partnerships
The impact of the DNPTE grew swiftly, thanks to the establishment of a framework to ensure quality intervention, including the release of a comprehensive guide. Strategic partnerships with renowned practitioner associations, governmental and non-governmental organizations—such as the Supreme Judicial Council, UNFM, the Ministries of Education, Health, Youth, and Social Inclusion—further solidified ONDE’s capacity to provide lasting and effective support for children.
Collective Action: A Shared Commitment
In January, ONDE organized two “Consultation Workshops on Child Mental Health in Morocco,” bringing together 270 healthcare professionals. These sessions were instrumental in identifying challenges and developing concrete recommendations to improve psychological care for children. They marked a key turning point, laying the groundwork for a more responsive mental health care system.
Training and skills enhancement
One major outcome from these discussions was the need for increased mental health training for professionals working with children. Between April and September 2024, ONDE trained more than 875 officials across various ministries, as well as 105 mental health professionals specializing in trauma care. Out of this group, 77 volunteers joined the DNPTE to provide their expertise directly in the field to vulnerable children.
Child parliament: A role model of engagement
In parallel, ONDE also engaged the 398 members of the Child Parliament, educating them on the importance of mental health and the new initiatives within the DNPTE. This program aligns perfectly with their 2023-2025 mandate: “Mental Health: A Right for Every Child.” It empowered them to advocate for children’s rights and act as key voices in their communities.
Innovation for mental health: e-Tofoula
Driven by continuous innovation, ONDE launched the first edition of the “e-Tofoula” hackathon, which brought together students, mental health professionals, and children to develop digital solutions. The event led to the creation of 12 innovative applications, five of which are now being incubated to enhance mental health resources for vulnerable children.
First edition of the “Mental health week”
In May 2024, ONDE held the first “Mental Health Week,” focusing on two key groups: new mothers and students. In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, a series of educational videos titled “Mother’s School” was produced and shared with over 3,000 young mothers, raising awareness about the mother-child bond and maternal mental health. Additionally, a program aimed at tackling school anxiety was implemented in 3,300 schools across Morocco, providing teachers and students with concrete tools to manage anxiety, thanks to a partnership with the Ministry of Education.
A scientific symposium for collaborative action
On National Children’s Day, May 25, 2024, ONDE organized a high-level scientific symposium on the theme “Mental Health: A Right for Every Child.” The event brought together national and international experts to review progress and sign new agreements to further improve care for children facing mental health challenges.
Building a brighter future for all children
With the continued support of its partners, ONDE is laying the foundation for a Morocco where child mental health is a shared priority. Aware of the work that remains, ONDE is committed to tirelessly striving for a future where every child can grow up in a safe and nurturing environment.
