Morocco is on the brink of a major digital breakthrough, with the rollout of 5G set to begin by the end of 2026. Backed by a massive investment plan exceeding 80 billion dirhams, this ambitious project signals the country’s determination to upgrade its digital infrastructure and solidify its standing as a regional tech leader.

Telecom providers have already begun retooling their networks to prepare for this leap in technology. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency has issued three licenses, totaling 2.1 billion dirhams. Among the major players, Orange Morocco has taken a particularly aggressive stance, spending 600 million dirhams to secure a 70 MHz frequency band.

Now pushing ahead of the competition, Orange Morocco has partnered with Ericsson to overhaul its network. The transformation hinges on a “dual-mode” 5G core and a cloud-native platform hosted locally—an approach designed to enable a shift toward fully standalone 5G, free from reliance on existing 4G infrastructure.

This new setup will unlock services that were previously out of reach, including voice over LTE, fixed wireless internet, and specialized connectivity solutions tailored to key industries. It also paves the way for a new wave of high-impact technologies, from artificial intelligence and smart devices to low-latency online gaming.

5G’s promise lies in its speed and near-zero latency, which opens up possibilities far beyond mobile browsing. Real-time streaming, large-scale device connectivity, and instant interactive interfaces will all become standard, fueling innovation across sectors like healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, and urban development.

The network rollout will be gradual, beginning in major cities and industrial zones. By 2030, more than 70% of the population is expected to be covered. This push aligns closely with Morocco’s broader digital strategy and economic ambitions, as the country prepares for key milestones ahead—including its co-hosting of the 2030 World Cup.
