A court in Rabat has sentenced 18 Senegal supporters to prison terms of between three months and one year over violence and vandalism during the Africa Cup of Nations final.
The group had been in custody since the 18 January match and were convicted of hooliganism, according to Le Parisien. Prosecutors had asked for sentences of up to two years.
The charges included violence against police, damage to stadium facilities, throwing objects and attempts to enter the pitch. The defendants denied any wrongdoing.
The unrest broke out during a tense final in Rabat, which Senegal won 1-0. Trouble began after a penalty was awarded to Morocco.
Play was halted for around 15 minutes as fans tried to storm the pitch and threw objects, including photographers and stewards chairs, onto the field. Police forces later intervened and made arrests.
In response, the Confederation of African Football imposed sanctions on both teams. Senegal coach Pape Bouna Thiaw was banned for five matches and fined $100,000.
Two Senegal players, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr, received two-match bans. Senegal’s football federation was fined $615,000, while Morocco’s federation was fined $315,000.
