The legendary surf break at Ras Lafâa in Safi is once again making waves, as it hosts the latest edition of the Safi Surf Invitational from December 5 to 7. After a standout debut last year, the event is back with a broader vision, blending elite surf competition with cultural festivities and community-driven initiatives.
Spearheaded by the Bahri Association and held under the banner of the Royal Moroccan Surf and Bodyboard Federation, this year’s event enjoys the backing of major partners, including the OCP Group and the Moroccan National Tourist Office. Eighty athletes from 16 countries across five continents are expected to hit the water, with 58 international surfers—each selected by invitation—vying for dominance on waves ranked among the top ten globally.
One of the standout features of this year’s edition is a new nighttime surfing segment, made possible by an innovative lighting system installed along the beach. Spectators will have free access to all the action, with much more than surf on offer. A lively beach village will showcase local artisans and vendors, while street art murals, live music, guided tours through Safi’s historic medina, and educational workshops will bring added vibrancy to the event.
Beyond sport, the Safi Surf Invitational aims to champion social and environmental causes. Local children from orphanages will be offered free surf lessons, and a major beach cleanup will unite volunteers and athletes in a shared effort to protect the coastline.
For Saad Abid, founder of the Bahri Association, the Invitational is about more than just riding waves. “It’s a platform that embodies solidarity, environmental awareness, and the sharing of knowledge,” he says. “At the same time, it helps position Safi as a city of the ocean, rich in culture and full of creative energy.”
