In a year marked by outstanding achievements, Tanger Med Port has solidified its position as the undisputed leader in the Mediterranean. The port complex reached a historic milestone by surpassing the 10 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) mark, reinforcing its crucial role in global maritime trade.
A record-breaking year for container traffic
Tanger Med achieved an exceptional throughput of 10,241,392 TEUs in 2024, reflecting an impressive 18.8% increase compared to the previous year. This growth underscores the port’s continuous expansion and rising prominence on the international stage. The success can be attributed to the trust placed by shipping operators and port authorities, along with the exceptional efficiency and productivity of Tanger Med’s teams.
The expansion of cutting-edge infrastructure, the deployment of state-of-the-art equipment, and the streamlining of maritime operations have significantly boosted the port’s performance. Faster turnaround times and improved logistics have made Tanger Med even more competitive, attracting a growing number of global trade players.
Road freight activity also saw a notable surge, with 516,842 TIR trucks handled in 2024—an 8.1% rise from 2023. This growth was primarily fueled by increasing demand for industrial goods (+6.8%) and agri-food products (+7.2%), highlighting Morocco’s strengthening trade ties with international partners.
The year 2024 also witnessed record passenger movement, with 3,047,387 travelers passing through Tanger Med, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. The annual Marhaba campaign, which facilitates the transit of Moroccans living abroad, was a resounding success thanks to enhanced organization and reinforced logistical measures, ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience.
A thriving automotive hub
Tanger Med’s vehicle terminals maintained their upward trajectory, handling a total of 600,872 vehicles in 2024, a 4% increase compared to 2023. This includes the export of 368,843 vehicles from Renault’s Melloussa and Casablanca (SOMACA) plants, along with 170,519 units from Stellantis’ Kénitra factory. Additionally, 34,100 vehicles were transshipped via the port, while 27,410 units were imported to meet local market demand.
These figures further establish Tanger Med as a key automotive logistics hub, efficiently linking Africa, Europe, and Asia through its strategic location and world-class facilities.
Looking ahead: A future of continued expansion
Buoyed by these impressive results, Tanger Med is gearing up for an even brighter future. The port plans to enhance its operational capacity, diversify its services, and continue adapting to the ever-evolving demands of global commerce.
With 2024 marking a pivotal year, Tanger Med has firmly positioned itself as a major force in maritime logistics, ready to embrace new challenges and contribute to Morocco’s economic growth on a global scale.
