UN names Ghizlane Benjelloun 2024 personality for her dedication to child well-being

The United Nations Development System in Morocco has announced Ghizlane Benjelloun as the 2024 UN Personality of the Year, in recognition of her long-standing commitment to children’s mental health and the promotion of their rights. This honor was revealed during a ceremony in Rabat, marking United Nations Day.

This prestigious distinction acknowledges Benjelloun’s tireless work in advocating for the well-being of Moroccan children. Nathalie Fustier, Resident Coordinator of the UN Development System in Morocco, praised Benjelloun’s dedication, emphasizing that today’s children are the hope and agents of change for a better future.

In her acceptance speech, Benjelloun expressed her gratitude, dedicating the award to every child and adult fighting for children’s rights. She stressed that the future of society depends on prioritizing children’s mental health and well-being.

The honor will be formally presented to Benjelloun by Eric Falt, interim Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Morocco and Regional Director of UNESCO’s Maghreb Office. Benjelloun’s contributions extend across various leadership roles: she is Vice-President of the National Observatory for Children’s Rights (ONDE), a board member of the National Union of Moroccan Women, and holds positions within international organizations such as the International Bureau for Children’s Rights (IBCR) and the European Association for Child and Adolescent Psychopathology (AEPEA). She is also actively involved in the international organization “La Cause des Bébés.”

As a university professor and international expert in child psychiatry, Benjelloun leads the child psychiatry department at the Mother and Child Hospital of CHU Ibn Rochd in Casablanca. She is a member of the scientific council of the Lalla Meryem Chair for Women and Children at Mohammed V University in Rabat, where she contributes to the academic community on child rights.

Known for her deep empathy and connection with vulnerable children and families, Benjelloun has mobilized both public and private sectors to advance initiatives aimed at improving children’s well-being and preventing psychological issues from an early age. Her advocacy has brought real change to the lives of many, according to the UN statement.

The annual designation of the UN Personality of the Year in Morocco, launched on United Nations Day (October 24), celebrates outstanding individuals who embody the universal values of the UN. This recognition aims to raise awareness and inspire others by highlighting initiatives that positively impact society, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
