Morocco received more money from the African Development Bank (AfDB) than any other African country in 2025, with approved funding reaching €1.26 billion.

The amount puts Morocco ahead of South Africa, Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, according to the bank’s latest annual report. The funding represents more than 13% of all AfDB approvals across Africa last year.

The largest projects included a $518 million guarantee for OCP Group to help raise green financing and a $173 million package for the Fonds d’Équipement Communal (FEC), which finances local government projects.

Overall, the AfDB approved €9.45 billion worth of projects across Africa in 2025, despite slower global growth, tighter financial markets and a drop in international development aid.

Morocco’s funding covered a range of areas, including infrastructure, green energy, local government investment, job training and support for small businesses.

Part of the money will help modernise airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez. Other funding will support local authorities as they improve roads, water networks and sanitation services.

The bank also backed Morocco’s efforts to create jobs through its “Cap Compétences 2030” programme, which aims to improve vocational training and help more young people and women enter the labour market.

South Africa was the second-largest recipient of AfDB funding in 2025, receiving just over €1 billion. Nigeria followed with €897 million, while Côte d’Ivoire received €818 million and Algeria €753 million.

By region, West Africa received the largest share of AfDB funding, accounting for 29% of total approvals. North Africa came second with 25%, helped largely by major projects in Morocco and Algeria.

Across the continent, AfDB disbursements reached €6.11 billion in 2025, the highest level recorded in the past five years.
