African Development Bank invests €1.26 billion in new Moroccan projects for 2024

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has initiated several new projects in Morocco since the beginning of 2024, with a total funding commitment of €1.26 billion (approximately 12.89 billion dirhams). This mid-year announcement underscores Morocco’s pivotal role as the AfDB’s foremost partner on the continent.

“Morocco, our leading partner in Africa, is making significant strides in its transformation under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI,” stated Achraf Tarsim, AfDB’s country manager for Morocco. He expressed the Bank’s pride in contributing to this progress.

To date, nine strategic projects have been launched with this financial package, aimed at bolstering resilience to external shocks, enhancing territorial competitiveness, modernizing universities, securing potable water access, valorizing forest resources, improving mobility and logistical advantages, and unlocking the potential of external trade.

Some of these projects are benefiting for the first time from the new public enterprise guarantee system recently adopted to catalyze public investments. These funds align with the priorities of the AfDB’s Country Strategy for Morocco 2024-2029, approved in May 2024, which aims to strengthen economic competitiveness and resilience, support robust and sustainable growth, and promote economic and social inclusion.

“This progress has been possible thanks to the personal involvement of Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance and AfDB governor for Morocco,” noted Tarsim. He emphasized Fettah’s role in co-developing the new country strategy and facilitating its operational implementation.

“Minister Fettah also facilitated the hosting of the Africa Investment Forum in Morocco, rallying efforts around flagship initiatives such as the Mohammed VI Fund and the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline, which we support,” he added. This complements her advocacy for modernizing the international financial architecture to benefit the continent.

As a founding member of the AfDB, Morocco is its top partner among the 54 African member countries. Over €12 billion has been invested in nearly 190 projects across key sectors including health, education, water, energy, agriculture, and infrastructure.
