Midfielder Rayane Bounida has decided to play for Morocco instead of Belgium, according to reports.

The 20-year-old, born in Vilvorde, told the Belgian football authorities about his decision after months of talks to keep him in their plans.

Belgium’s sporting director Vincent Mannaert and Under-21 coach Gill Swerts had offered him a place in their long-term project, including a key role in a future Olympic team. But Bounida said he wants to represent Morocco.

Swerts had recently said Bounida has “special qualities” and could make a difference in midfield, even with strong competition from other players.

Bounida was called up twice to Belgium’s Under-21 side and played 41 matches across youth levels from Under-15 to Under-21.

He plays for Ajax Amsterdam, where he has become more important this season. He has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing eight assists. His pass accuracy is 93.2%, one of the best among young attacking midfielders in the Dutch league.

In the league, he has played 18 matches, scoring once and assisting four goals.

His decision comes as Morocco continues to attract more players with dual nationality. Others, like Bilal El Khannouss, have made the same choice.

Belgian media say his family played a key role, pointing to his strong cultural ties to Morocco.

His market value is estimated at about €5m and has been rising since he extended his contract with Ajax until June 2028.
