In a groundbreaking medical first for the African continent, doctors at Littoral Clinic Ain Diab in Casablanca have successfully performed a robotic surgery to implant an artificial urinary sphincter in a 24-year-old patient suffering from lower-body paralysis. The procedure, led by the urology team at the clinic—part of the Oncorad Group network—marks a historic milestone, as this type of operation had never before been carried out in Africa, not even using traditional surgical methods.
Artificial urinary sphincters are typically used to treat patients with severe urinary incontinence caused by a malfunctioning natural sphincter. In this case, the surgical team employed robotic technology to carry out the procedure with extraordinary precision, enabling a minimally invasive approach. The use of robotics significantly lowered surgical risks, shortened recovery time, and enhanced post-operative comfort for the patient.
Globally, this type of urological reconstructive surgery is still highly specialized. In France, for example, only three centers perform it—two using robotic techniques. With this successful operation, Morocco becomes the first country in Africa to master this advanced method, offering new hope to patients who would otherwise need to travel abroad to access such care.
