Moroccan players are right in the middle of the action this week as the Champions League playoff matches decide who goes through to the last 16.

On Tuesday night in Germany, Ayoub El Kaabi and Olympiacos face a tough job away to Bayer Leverkusen. The Greek side are 2-0 down from the first leg and need at least two goals just to take the game to extra time.

El Kaabi actually scored in the first match, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR check.

On Wednesday, the focus moves to France and Spain.

Achraf Hakimi is expected to start for Paris Saint-Germain as they try to protect a 3-2 lead against AS Monaco. Hakimi scored in the first leg and continues to be one of PSG’s most important players.

In Madrid, Brahim Díaz is hoping for more playing time as Real Madrid defend a narrow 1-0 lead over Benfica. He came on late in the first game and could be used again if Madrid need fresh energy or creativity.

Meanwhile, former Morocco captain Romain Saïss has announced he is retiring from international football. He led the national team to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup and leaves as one of the country’s most respected players.

The teams that win their playoff ties will find out their last-16 opponents in Friday’s draw.
