The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the OCP Group have joined forces to tackle the pressing issues of water stress and food insecurity in Africa. Backed by a €100 million loan from the IFC, this ambitious project involves the construction of a 219-kilometer pipeline to transport desalinated water from Morocco’s Atlantic coast to the country’s central regions.
“This project reflects OCP’s deep commitment to sustainability and innovation. By ensuring a reliable source of desalinated water, we not only secure the continued growth of our operations but also provide vital resources to local communities. Together with the IFC, we are paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future,” said Mostafa Terrab, CEO of OCP Group.
The pipeline will deliver a steady supply of desalinated water, crucial not only for OCP’s industrial operations as a global leader in phosphate and fertilizer production but also for the surrounding communities facing water scarcity.
This initiative is aligned with OCP’s Water Program, which aims to use 100% non-conventional water sources by the end of 2024. Furthermore, by 2030, the pipeline will be entirely powered by renewable energy, bolstering Morocco’s resilience to climate change impacts.
This project underscores OCP’s dedication to combating climate change while supporting Morocco’s sustainability goals. It highlights a collaborative approach to addressing water and food security challenges, aligning with the nation’s long-term development priorities.
