Khalid Baddou is the new general manager of UM6P Hospitals, the healthcare arm of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). His main job will be to strengthen the hospital network’s economic model and connect its work more closely with the university’s education, research and innovation activities.
UM6P Hospitals is part of the Smart Health Care City (SHCC) in Benguerir. The project brings together hospitals, medical training, research and health technology.
The network is planned to have between 350 and 400 beds. Its facilities include a general hospital with about 140 beds, a 60-bed geriatric centre and a 120-bed rehabilitation and post-care centre.
The general hospital covers several areas, including emergency care, maternity, endocrinology, nephrology and cardiology. The wider network is expected to provide more than 40 medical and surgical specialties.
UM6P Hospitals also has advanced diagnostic and research facilities. These include 3T MRI scanners, advanced radiology equipment and specialised pathology laboratories.
The hospital network works with UM6P’s Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS) and research groups such as ISSB Labs. The aim is to link patient care with the training of doctors, pharmacists, nurses and healthcare managers, while supporting biomedical research.
Health technology is another part of the project. UM6P Hospitals is linked to the UM6P Biotech Park, where medical knowledge and local health needs can be developed into new technologies and products.
Baddou’s appointment comes as the hospital network moves from setting up its infrastructure to expanding its operations. A key priority is making sure the large investment in healthcare infrastructure can support a sustainable long-term business model.
UM6P Hospitals has received major financial backing. Its corporate capital was raised to 500 million dirhams through an Extraordinary General Assembly. The wider health and hospitality projects in Benguerir have also received investment of up to 1.2 billion dirhams.
UM6P is backed by the OCP Group and focuses on higher education, applied research and innovation. Its work includes projects aimed at addressing development and health challenges in Africa.
UM6P Hospitals is designed to be the clinical part of the Smart Health Care City. Its role is to provide medical care while supporting medical education, research and health innovation.
The wider goal is to build a healthcare and health sciences centre that meets international standards and serves patients, students and researchers in Morocco and across Africa.
