On Friday afternoon in Rabat, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan and Prince Moulay Rachid, presided over the opening session of the fourth legislative year of the 11th Parliament. During this event, King Mohammed VI underscored the positive momentum surrounding the Moroccan Sahara issue, which remains a top national priority for all Moroccans. He highlighted the growing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative from several influential nations.
In his speech, the King emphasized that France now firmly supports Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire territory of the Sahara and backs the autonomy plan within the framework of Morocco’s territorial integrity as the only solution to resolve this regional dispute. Expressing his gratitude, King Mohammed VI thanked France and President Emmanuel Macron on behalf of himself and the Moroccan people for their unequivocal support of the Moroccan Sahara.
The King’s speech acknowledged that this recognition of Morocco’s historical rights is a pivotal development. France, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a key player on the international stage, is a significant partner in these efforts. Moreover, the King noted France’s deep understanding of the complexities of this regional conflict and its alignment with UN efforts to establish a political process aimed at reaching a definitive resolution.
Broad international support
King Mohammed VI welcomed the broader international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, with major global powers, such as the United States and France, as well as Arab and African nations, standing firmly behind Morocco. He particularly praised countries that have demonstrated their commitment by opening consulates in the southern cities of Laâyoune and Dakhla.
The King also highlighted the support of Spain, which shares deep historical ties with the region and has recently aligned its position in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity. He mentioned that the majority of European Union countries are similarly supportive of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.
Economic development and continental strategy
The Monarch further emphasized that many countries are actively contributing to the socio-economic development of the Moroccan Sahara, particularly through trade and investment. This economic collaboration is helping to integrate the Moroccan Sahara into Morocco’s broader development plans and Africa’s strategic initiatives, including the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project and the Atlantic African States Process. These projects are positioning the region as a crucial hub for communication and exchange between Morocco and the rest of Africa.
King Mohammed VI expressed his deep appreciation to Morocco’s friends and allies for their support in solidifying Morocco’s territorial integrity. He also commended the ongoing social and economic growth in the southern provinces, made possible through the solidarity and dedication of the Moroccan people, both at home and abroad.
A tribute to Moroccan unity
The King concluded by saluting the efforts of Morocco’s national diplomacy, the country’s institutions, and all patriotic citizens who have worked tirelessly to defend Morocco’s legitimate interests and counter the efforts of its adversaries. He also extended his gratitude to the people of the Moroccan Sahara for their unwavering loyalty to the nation and their commitment to preserving Morocco’s territorial integrity and stability.
