King Mohammed VI could visit France in the third week of January 2027, as Paris and Rabat work to agree on the date and prepare the main issues for the visit. The Élysée has proposed the third week of January to the Royal Cabinet, according to La Tribune Dimanche. The date has not been approved yet. The two sides are expected to agree on the exact date in the coming weeks.
The visit was first expected in autumn 2026. Le Monde reported in July that it had been pushed back to early 2027. The latest proposal gives a more specific timeframe for the visit.
A new treaty between France and Morocco is expected to be one of the main issues on the agenda. Work on the treaty has reached an advanced stage, with the committees responsible for drafting it holding their latest working session on 21 September.
The planned agreement is expected to follow the model of the Quirinal Treaty between France and Italy, signed in November 2021. That treaty created a framework for regular cooperation between the two countries on foreign policy, defence, security, the economy and other areas.
The agreement with Morocco would be the first treaty of this kind that France has signed with a non-European country, according to La Tribune Dimanche.
The treaty is also expected to be one of the main outcomes of King Mohammed VI’s visit if the two sides complete the negotiations in time.
The planned visit comes after several years of tension between Rabat and Paris. Relations began to improve after French President Emmanuel Macron visited Morocco in October 2024.
That visit helped restore political contacts between the two countries and opened the way for closer cooperation in areas including industry, energy, investment, security and infrastructure.
France remains a major economic partner for Morocco, with French companies active in sectors including car manufacturing, aerospace, renewable energy and railways. French companies have also been involved in high-speed rail projects with the Moroccan railway operator ONCF.
The latest developments suggest that talks between the two countries have moved from repairing political ties to building a longer-term framework for cooperation.
The January date is still only a proposal. The final date and the official programme of the state visit have not yet been announced.
