he strengthening of the political participation of young people and their representation in parliament and local authorities requires the revision of the current electoral system, said, Tuesday, secretary general of the Popular Movement party (MP), Mohand Laenser.

Laenser, who was the guest of MAP Forum organized under the theme “The MP and the challenges of the 2021 elections”, stressed that the disaffection of young people for politics is explained by their disinterest in joining political parties and not in political action in general.

The creation by parties of parallel bodies such as those of young people, who work alongside these formations without being able to run in elections, has contributed to this disaffection, he explained, noting that parties opt for older people in their choice of candidates.

Calling the adoption of the quota to strengthen the representation of young people in Parliament a “mistake”, Laenser insisted that the consolidation of young people’s political participation should be initiated through candidacies in communal elections. In this regard, he called for the revision of the current electoral system so as to devote certain constituencies exclusively to this category.

In addition, Laenser announced that he will not stand for a third mandate at the head of the MP, while assuring that he will continue to work within this political formation.
