Mauritania simplifies visa process for Moroccan truck drivers

In a groundbreaking move, Mauritania has introduced a simplified visa system aimed at streamlining administrative procedures for Moroccan professional drivers engaged in international road transport. According to a statement from the Moroccan Embassy in Nouakchott, these drivers will now have access to a multiple-entry visa valid for three months.

This policy change is expected to significantly ease the challenges faced by transport operators, who have long been hindered by bureaucratic hurdles. Previously, each trip into Mauritania required a new visa application—a time-consuming and costly process that slowed the movement of goods between Morocco, Mauritania, and other countries in West Africa and the Sahel.

“The Mauritanian authorities, in response to the efforts of the embassy, have granted professional Moroccan drivers the opportunity to obtain a multiple-entry visa valid for three months,” the official statement confirmed.

The transport industry has welcomed the measure, which is expected to accelerate commercial exchanges along key trade routes linking Morocco to sub-Saharan markets. This initiative highlights the growing collaboration between the two countries in strengthening economic and logistical ties.

Beyond this new visa policy, the measure is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. Notable infrastructure projects, such as the development of an electricity interconnection between Morocco and Mauritania, are already underway. This project aims to secure the region’s energy supply and promote integrated economic networks that can bolster regional trade.

To access the new visa, eligible drivers and transport company managers are encouraged to apply through Mauritania’s online visa platform. A dedicated “professional driver” option has been added to facilitate the application process and ensure smooth approval for the new visa type.

The Moroccan Embassy expressed its “deep gratitude” to the Mauritanian authorities for their swift cooperation in implementing the initiative.

This development is expected to bolster Morocco’s trade networks with its African partners, reinforcing the supply chains essential for economic growth across the region. By improving mobility and reducing administrative delays, both countries are laying the groundwork for more efficient transportation systems that will drive future investments and development in transport, energy, and commerce.
