A private equity firm has taken full control of a major packaging factory in Morocco. Mediterrania Capital Partners has acquired 100% of Société Marocaine des Manufactures de Mohammedia, the holding structure for Amcor Flexibles Mohammedia, from Amcor Group.

The Mohammedia site built a strong reputation under Amcor’s ownership. The new owner says the focus now shifts to expanding production and improving efficiency.

Accuracy handled financial due diligence and transaction support. The investment was led by Hatim Ben Ahmed, Mohamed Ali Abdelhak and Sara Bencherif, with advisory work from Yvan Arakaza, Nizar N and Achille Vanoye.

The acquisition fits MCP’s Fund IV strategy, which targets African mid-sized companies with annual revenue above €20m. The firm plans to grow AFM’s output to serve Morocco, the Maghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Morocco’s flexible packaging market is valued at about $2.07bn and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 3.92% until 2031. Growth is linked to the rise of supermarkets and hypermarkets, which need lightweight packaging such as stand-up pouches and resealable films.

Demand is also rising because of the “sachet economy”. Many consumers are buying smaller, single-use products, especially in personal care and drinks. This increases the need for fast and affordable flexible packaging.

Plastic still makes up around 68% of the market. However, producers face pressure to invest in biodegradable and compostable materials. These segments are expected to grow faster than the overall market, at about 4.73%, as Morocco tightens environmental rules.

For Amcor, the sale supports a wider portfolio shift after its $8.4bn acquisition of Berry Global. The company is focusing more on medical and pharmaceutical packaging.
