Les Grands Travaux Routiers (GTR), a leading Moroccan construction company, has just won a key contract for the construction of the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Line (LGV). Following in the footsteps of TGCC, GTR has been awarded a significant portion of the civil engineering work for this large-scale project. Valued at 2.15 billion dirhams, the contract covers earthworks, the construction of engineering structures, the restoration of communication routes, and fencing along the route.
So far, the Moroccan National Railways Office (ONCF) has awarded five of the seven major lots for the project, with GTR successfully competing against three Chinese companies and another Moroccan firm to secure its share, thanks to a more competitive offer.
Breakdown of lot allocations:
- Lot 1 (3.4 billion dirhams): China Railway No 04 Engineering
- Lot 2 (4.5 billion dirhams): Shandong Hi-Speed Engineering-Construction
- Lot 4 (2.83 billion dirhams): TGCC (Moroccan company)
- Lot 5 (2.83 billion dirhams): China Railway 20th Bureau Group (CRCC 20)
- GTR’s Lot (2.15 billion dirhams): Earthworks, engineering structures, etc.
In addition, a 1.385 billion dirham project management assistance contract has been awarded to a consortium led by Egis Rail.
Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed line on track for 2030 World Cup
The Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed rail line will stretch from Kenitra to Marrakech Guéliz, including all intermediate stations, except for the ERTMS section. The project is expected to be operational before the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal. This ambitious timeline highlights Morocco’s commitment to developing key infrastructure in preparation for the prestigious global event.
