Moroccan tourism sees 7% growth in overnight stays by August 2024

The volume of overnight stays in classified tourist accommodation establishments (EHTC) in Morocco reached over 18.7 million by the end of August 2024, reflecting a 7% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to the Tourism Observatory.

This growth was driven by a strong rise in international tourism, which saw a 13% increase, while domestic tourism experienced a slight decline of 4%. The Observatory’s statistics also show significant performance across various destinations in Morocco. Leading the way were Agadir (+17%), Al Haouz (+15%), Marrakech (+8%), Casablanca (+6%), Essaouira (+4%), and Rabat (+3%), all recording positive results compared to the end of August 2023.

Revenue from non-resident tourism climbs to 76.4 billion dirhams

Tourism revenues in foreign currencies generated by non-resident tourists in Morocco rose to 76.4 billion dirhams (MAD) during the first eight months of 2024, compared to 71.63 billion dirhams in 2023, representing an increase of 6.7%.

In August alone, the volume of overnight stays in EHTC grew by 6% compared to the same month in 2023. Several key destinations showed varied performances, with Al Hoceima leading with a 75% rise, followed by Al Haouz (13%), Marrakech (7%), Agadir and Tangier (6% each), while Essaouira and Casablanca saw declines of 8% and 3%, respectively.

In terms of travel revenues, the total for August 2024 reached 17 billion dirhams, up 19.39% from the 14.24 billion dirhams recorded in August 2023.
