Morocco saw the biggest rise in internet speed in the Middle East and Africa in 2025, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index, after switching on 5G late in the year.

The country jumped 22 places in the global mobile internet ranking to reach 39th by December. This made Morocco the top country in North Africa for mobile internet, ahead of Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.

Ookla said the improvement followed the launch of 5G in November, along with ongoing work to upgrade mobile networks and expand fibre cables. Morocco was one of the last countries in North Africa to launch 5G, but the change had a strong effect in the final months of the year.

More people started using 5G phones, which led to more fast-speed tests. This pushed up average mobile download speeds and helped Morocco climb the global ranking. In some countries that launched 5G earlier, speed gains were smaller as networks struggled to keep up with rising use.

Morocco also made progress in home internet. It moved up 11 places in 2025 to rank 105th worldwide. Average fixed internet download speed reached 56.27 megabits per second by the end of the year, helped by the slow spread of fibre connections and a move away from older copper lines.

Across the region, Gulf countries stayed well ahead in internet speeds. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman continued to lead, with several among the world’s fastest for mobile internet.

North Africa saw the biggest changes in 2025, as most countries launched 5G. Morocco showed the strongest overall improvement. Algeria also saw gains after launching 5G late in the year, while Tunisia and Egypt recorded smaller or uneven progress.

Ookla said Morocco’s position could drop slightly in 2026 as more people use 5G and networks come under pressure. However, work to improve internet networks is expected to continue.
