Morocco is ramping up its national surveillance and response plan in light of the rapid and widespread outbreak of monkeypox (Mpox) in several African countries, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced on Thursday.
The authorities have updated the national strategy to reflect the evolving international situation, the latest understanding of the disease, and the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), according to the ministry.
Since its implementation in June 2022, the proactive national plan has successfully identified five cases of Mpox in Morocco up until March 2024. Most of these cases were imported and did not result in any secondary infections among contacts. The affected individuals experienced mild symptoms and fully recovered without complications.
The Ministry also reassured the public about the country’s high level of vigilance and preparedness, committing to continued communication and updates as the situation develops.
The WHO on Wednesday declared Mpox a public health emergency of international concern. The organization highlighted the rapid spread of the epidemic since last year and the high mortality rate in one African country, emphasizing the need for global cooperation to curb its spread.
