On Thursday, June 6, in Rabat, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch presided over the signing ceremony of a strategic investment agreement between the Sino-European group Gotion High-Tech and the Moroccan government.
This major strategic investment aims to establish a complete industrial ecosystem for the manufacture of electric batteries in Kenitra. This project represents not only the first “gigafactory” in Morocco but also the first of its kind in the Middle East and Africa region, solidifying Morocco’s position as a regional leader in the automotive industry and energy transition.
Groundbreaking project with significant impact
“The Moroccan state has chosen to partner with GOTION High-Tech, a global leader in the electric battery sector and a key shareholder being the German group Volkswagen, to develop an integrated electric vehicle battery production project with a capacity of 20 GWh. This project, valued at 12.8 billion dirhams, will create 17,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs, including 2,300 high-skilled positions,” stated a government communiqué.
This investment marks the first phase of Gotion High-Tech’s industrial activities in Morocco. The long-term plan includes scaling the production capacity to 100 GWh, with a total investment of 65 billion dirhams.
Gotion High-Tech’s global expansion
GOTION High-Tech has made significant investments globally, including in Europe, the United States, and Asia, launching nearly 12 gigafactories over the past two years to meet the growing global demand for electric mobility solutions.
