Morocco has officially commenced construction on its first electric vehicle battery Gigafactory in Kénitra, positioning itself as a significant player in Africa’s green mobility sector. Located within the Atlantic Free Zone, this groundbreaking factory is a landmark project with an investment of 65 billion dirhams ($6.3 billion USD), marking the largest industrial investment in Morocco since Renault’s plant in Tangier. The project, led by Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech, aims to produce 100 GWh annually—enough to power hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles.
Strategic location for automotive synergy
The choice of Kénitra as the site for this factory is a calculated decision. Close to Stellantis, one of Morocco’s key automotive players, the factory’s location will enable seamless integration with the country’s automotive production chain, creating a streamlined supply route for electric vehicle components. Additionally, the upcoming Kénitra Atlantic Port, slated for completion by 2030, will strengthen logistics networks and facilitate battery exports, enhancing Morocco’s role as a hub for electric mobility in Africa.
This venture also includes a strategic partnership with Volkswagen, which holds a 40% stake in Gotion High-Tech’s Moroccan subsidiary. The collaboration underscores both the importance of this project to Volkswagen’s future and Morocco’s rising status as an industrial leader in sustainable technology.
Economic and environmental impacts
In addition to providing a significant economic boost, the Kénitra Gigafactory is expected to accelerate Morocco’s push toward a low-carbon economy by supplying batteries for electric vehicles. The project aligns with King Mohammed VI’s vision for Morocco as a leader in energy transition and renewable energy adoption. As Morocco moves toward becoming Africa’s electric mobility pioneer, the country is simultaneously making itself a more attractive destination for global investors, keen on leveraging Morocco’s commitment to sustainable and competitive industrial practices.
Morocco’s role in Africa’s green mobility future
The Kénitra Gigafactory highlights Morocco’s ambition to drive electric mobility and strengthen its industrial sector. By spearheading battery production in Africa, Morocco is not only advancing its green energy goals but also fostering long-term economic growth. This project solidifies Morocco’s place as a strategic industrial platform, ready to compete on a global scale in the future of clean mobility and sustainable energy solutions.
